Why do people become the victims of drug dependency and domestic violence, and why do rough sleepers refuse communal hostels and shelters?
In the 1960s scientists tested self administration. misuse and dependence liability of morphine on rats.
One rat was put in one small cage and given two drinks to choose from, water and water laced with morphine.
The experiment found that the rat that was held in the same cage for the same period of time survived.
The study found that the rat that was given the choice between morphine and water refused to drink the clean water and died.
The experiment was flawed because the scientists forgot to include that the rats are social creatures and not comfortable living in small cages.
In the 1970s Bruce Alexander from Simon Fraser University - British Colombia repeated the experiment in a natural environment he called "Rat Park". The same dose of morphone and water was placed in a much bigger cage.
The rats were given food balls, wheels for exercise and space and other rats to play and mate with.
The study found that all the rats tried the morphine laced drinker; but none of the rats got addicted to the point of harm. The study concluded that dependence liability is dependent on the environments; and the social connections of that place.
The study is often cited as a hypothesis why dependence liability is higher among the 390,000 unhoused population in the UK, vs the housed population.
Further the experiment showed that if you first isolate and addict the rats; before putting them in rat park; their dependence liability remains high as a group. This may explain why rough sleepers refuse emergency accommodation.
