I think in truth; nobody survived the pandemic. I think it was a total wipeout from the off; and there was nothing anyone could have done different. The neurochemical pathways of our brains have been altered permanently – like a bad acid trip. Everybody is showing signs of schizoid personality disorder – irked by noises – finding all people an intrusion -  narcissistically trying to convince each of the reality of which ever misanthropy fuelled fantasy is doomed.

I grew up in York; and if you are from there you might remember that there was a beardy guy who would go out on the weekends and strand under a sign saying “10 REASONS WHY THE WORLD WILL END SOON” –, he would stand there in an anorak (of course) with his arms out stretched holding A4 printouts for people to read – I always chuckled under my breath at him – it wasn’t his obvious messiah complex it was just the the word “soon”. Everybody with frightening forecasts can never quite specify when the end will come; only that it will.

Bearing this in mind – I felt I would embody this oracle and come up with some predictions for the future. I only have one so far. I call it “Business Electronics” – as opposed to “Consumer Electronics”. When I look at recent innovations in technology; I see them as abstract and difficult for a consumer to understand the appeal. VR Headsets, Self Driving Cars, AI Assistants. Crypto Currency. I can’t shake the idea that this these innovations are actually not really aimed at me; but my employer. No private office for me in my role; I will be given a virtual private office where my employer can keep an eye on me – even though I am working from home; paying for the reality out of my own pocket but hey; the virtuality is on the company dime. No attractive personal assistant; I will give given an AI assistant; no cash bonus for hitting my goals – I will be given some bitcoin; No company car I will be given a subscription to a self driven ride hailing app.

I predict this future to be true; and I know I am right because I know how willing everybody is to it. Myself included. As a result I thought; we need a quite and warm and soft walled place to be; and it has to be private and compartmentalised from the main house. So; I thought about Garden Annexes; and then I realised I would never be able to afford one. From detailed research I leaned that nearly all extensions and garden annexes are built by inheritance. So – as a QS and an Architect; I thought I would design and built it myself before the other 200 or so Architect/QS’s did.

 After a lot of research and material testing and repeated spec and cost control surveys. I think I might have done it. PAPA igloo; is under £2500. Below the work from home tax relief maximum claim; below the average amount of savings the average property owner saved in a year; below the average credit card remaining balance; below the inheritance income of the bottom quintile.

This is what I was made to do; redesigning on the grounds of cost - over and over again.  Not so much "creativity" but "destructivity". 

I like to think I specialise in two things; creative accounting and destructive design. IGLOO one of the results of this.
